How we talk about Anti-Racist Work

We speak about power & privilege, not diversity & inclusion.

When we talk numbers we are talking about diversity and inclusion. The problem with framing the discussion around diversity and inclusion is that it quickly becomes a shield and all too often an excuse. It is instead a conversation about power and privilege.

By power and privilege we mean the ability of organisations and individuals to set the agenda and seeing a shift in that power.

We speak about institutional racism,it is not personal

It’s about the systems and structures that reinforce racism in our sector and society.Too many discussions on race talk about if racism exists in organisations. It is not a question about if, it is a question about HOW?

We speak about and value lived experience over data

This is not a numbers game. The latest reports on representation and pay in the sector are not telling us anything new. We can see the data in front of us every day. The lack of data is not what is stopping us from changing the status quo.
